Joe Goldberg is back in the Big Apple, but this time he's not just a bookstore employee with murderous tendencies—he's a billionaire with murderous tendencies. You Season 5 brings Penn Badgley's iconic character full circle as the series prepares for its gripping conclusion.

From Humble Beginnings to Manhattan's Elite
In the final season of Netflix's hit psychological thriller, Joe Goldberg returns to where it all began: New York City. However, fans will immediately notice that Joe is no longer the working-class bookstore employee we met in Season 1. Thanks to his marriage to billionaire CEO Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), Joe has ascended to the upper echelons of Manhattan society, where he is viewed as a devoted husband, caring father, and the city's beloved "Prince Charming."
"Joe doesn't feel great about anything, really. He's trying to stomach being one of the 0.01%, a billionaire," Badgley reveals in an interview. "He's fooling himself, but he's doing a pretty good job, as he always does."
The New Cast of Characters
Season 5 introduces viewers to an entirely new social circle for Joe—one filled with wealthy socialites, ruthless business executives, and captivating downtown creatives.
The Lockwood Empire
A significant portion of Joe's new life revolves around the Lockwood Corporation, his wife Kate's family business. Among the power players are identical twins Reagan and Maddie Lockwood, both portrayed by Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect, True Blood). These twins will undoubtedly add a new dynamic to the cutthroat business world that Joe now inhabits.
Downtown Connections
Despite his newfound wealth and status, Joe finds himself drawn back to his roots. His distaste for the "rarefied air" of the Upper West Side pulls him toward downtown Manhattan and his old haunt, Mooney's Bookstore. It's here that Joe encounters free-spirited Bronte, played by Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid's Tale, Orange Is the New Black).
"Downtown represents the darker, truer part of Joe," explains co-showrunner Michael Foley, hinting that Joe's journey between these two worlds will form a central conflict in the season.
Joe's Internal Struggle
At the heart of Season 5 is Joe's ongoing battle with himself. Despite achieving the wealth and status that many dream of, Joe remains fundamentally unsettled.
"At the beginning of Season 5, he has accepted those dark parts of himself," Badgley explains. "But Joe has also quickly learned that Kate couldn't (or wouldn't) accept him, as much as it seemed like she would at the end of Season 4. Joe has withheld a lot of key bits of truth."
This suggests that despite Kate's apparent willingness to accept Joe's dark side at the end of Season 4, their relationship has become strained by secrets and half-truths.
What to Expect in the Final Season
As you head toward its series finale, viewers can anticipate the formation of new relationships, the testing of loyalties, and—as is tradition for the show—a body count. The question remains: as Joe races toward what's been described as an "unforgettable ending," will he finally face consequences for his actions, or will he once again find a way to escape justice?
With Joe straddling two worlds—the elite Manhattan society represented by Kate and the Lockwood family, and the more authentic downtown scene embodied by Bronte and Mooney's Bookstore—Season 5 promises to deliver the psychological complexity and moral ambiguity that has made You a global phenomenon.
As this beloved series prepares to turn its final page, one thing is certain: Joe Goldberg's story won't end quietly.
