How Do Smart Pajamas Work?


Unlike traditional sleep studies that require bulky equipment and clinical visits, these smart pajamas use advanced graphene-based sensors that detect tiny skin movements to monitor breathing patterns. Even when worn loosely around the neck and chest, the sensors provide highly accurate readings, eliminating the need for uncomfortable sticky patches or wires.


AI-Powered Sleep Monitoring with 98.6% Accuracy


The smart pajamas incorporate a lightweight AI algorithm called SleepNet, which can identify six different sleep states with 98.6% accuracy while filtering out natural movements like tossing and turning. This energy-efficient system requires only a small amount of sleep data to differentiate between normal and disordered sleep patterns.

According to Professor Luigi Occhipinti, who led the research, these pajamas provide an accessible and affordable alternative to polysomnography (PSG), the current gold standard for sleep studies, which is expensive and impractical for long-term home use.

“Sleep monitoring is crucial for maintaining good health, but existing methods are often uncomfortable or inaccurate. Our smart pyjamas offer a practical solution for millions struggling with sleep disorders” says Occhipinti.

Future Applications & Next Steps


The research team is working on further enhancing sensor durability for long-term use and exploring additional applications, such as baby monitoring and broader health tracking. The study was supported by the EU Graphene Flagship, Haleon, and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
